Preview of War Heroes #1

June 22, 2008 – 10:45 pm by Derek

Here’s a preview of the first few pages of War Heroes #1 by Millar and Hitch. It’s mostly just setting up the book’s world, but it still looks very promising.

Ultimate Origins #1

June 6, 2008 – 2:51 pm by Greg Webster

Ultimate Origins #1So, in case you hadn’t heard, Ultimate Origins is finally out. While you may not believe this, it isn’t ENTIRELY about Wolverine. While the title suggests it might be the Ultimate version of Wolverine’s origins ala ORIGINS, what this book really is about is combining every element of the Ultimate universe. I was blown away by this first issue, going from a sceptic to fan in the first few pages, where they show Wilson Fisk (Kingpin), Nick Fury and James Howlett (Wolverine) in WW2 together. It goes on to set the stage for an epic crossover story that really will change some of the perceptions of the Ultimate U. I don’t want to spoil anything, but this is a big one. I don’t know that much about the Ultimate books, beside The Ultimates (which is glorious and hilarious if you haven’t read it). This book takes all the Ultimate books and makes them totally unique and much more different from the normal Marvel universe than you ever realized. Check it out, I give two Skrull thumbs up!

Next Week’s Books Are Up!

June 6, 2008 – 11:10 am by Derek

And there’s some good’uns! The influx of new Marvel ongoing titles continues with Skaar Son of Hulk #1 and Eternals #1, both of which receive the FP seal of approval. And, speaking of books that bear the sacred seal, Captain Britain & MI 13 #2 and Invincible #50 will be out as well. DC’s Salvation Run and Gotham Underground will be finishing up their runs and Doktor Sleepless #7 exists in some parallel dimension from the future and will manifest itself through our ocular implants.

Marvel 1985 could be best of 2008?

June 1, 2008 – 4:25 pm by Derek

Marvel 1985With some stiff competition for your dollar amidst a slew of crossovers and #1s this summer, Marvel 1985 looks to be a must-read after a great first issue! It is the time of the first Secret War in the Marvel Universe, and a young and troubled comic fan is beginning to see some familiar villains in the real universe of 1985. Is it real? Where are the heroes? Mark Millar and Tommy Edwards deliver a delightful journey into the realm of fiction and reality, and the imagination that bridges the two.

Jump on this one before it’s the talk of the town!

We Agree; War Heroes Is Going To Be Awesome

May 22, 2008 – 7:17 pm by Derek

War HeroesGreg and I don’t agree on much. He says ‘toe-may-toe,’ I say ‘toe-mah-toe,’ etc. We can both agree on two things though: 1) Pokemon is pretty sweet, and 2) War Heroes, the new project by Tony Harris and Mark Millar, is going to be awesome. War Heroes takes place in a near-future version of the U.S. which has been decimated by years of terrorism and war. With no effective counter weapon, the military turns to superhumanity as it’s last hope.

Here’s a few words from Millar about the book:

“War Heroes is everything I’ve been leading up to with Civil War, Ultimates, The Authority, Kick Ass and Wanted,” said Millar. “In a way, it’s the culmination of superhero concepts I’ve thus far only dreamed about, brought to fruition due to Tony’s artwork beautiful line work and the unique creative freedom Image Comics provides. Consider this our Ultimates 3.”(My emphasis)

Millar continued, “War Heroes is a grand step away from superheroes as you previously perceived them. Tony and I are doing this without any restriction, completely uncensored, taking superheroes to their next evolutionary step.”

War Heroes is scheduled to come out on June 25th. Can’t wait!

DC’s New Weekly: Too Good to Pass Up

May 16, 2008 – 10:38 pm by Derek

TrinityI know some of you grumble at the idea of another DC weekly. “Bah,” you say. “Countdown wasn’t even that good, and $2.99 a week really adds up!” Well, friends, I’m here to deliver some bad news: Trinity, the name of said new weekly, looks like it’s going to be great! Trinity has all the makings of a good read; It features Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman in a character defining epic that is said to solidify why these three are the most important and powerful of the DC Universe. On top of that you’ve got veteran writer Kurt Busiek and iconic Spider-Man artist Mark Bagley in his first creation for the label. Twelve pages a week will belong to that team, while ten additional pages will feature a story by Busiek and Fabian Nicieza with Tom Derenick, Scott McDaniel and Mike Norton on the art.

The weekly is here to stay, and that’s A-OK by me.

Marvel #1 Issues

May 15, 2008 – 2:06 pm by Greg Webster

This week and last week have been huge with the first issues and one-shots for Marvel, and I want to give you guys a quick run down of whats come out:

Last Week
Avengers/Invaders #1
This new series, with covers by Alex Ross, features the Invaders from WW2 meeting up with the New and Mighty Avengers sometime before Secret Invasion but after Cap’s death. The fun part is that the Invaders are under the impression that the Thunderbolts are Nazis! Hilarity ensues, or does Iron Man’s guilt get him? Tune in to this issue to find out.

Invincible Iron Man #1
Invincible Iron Man #1This new Iron Man story kicks off in a way that is easy to pick up for people fresh off the movie, but doesn’t drop continuity. Stark still has Extremis and is director of SHIELD, but Pepper Potts and Jim Rhodes come in for people familiar with them now. The story focuses on a new thing for Stark to guilt-trip himself on, with modern threats transferred over to the Marvel universe, and look really fantastic.

Iron Man Viva Las Vegas #1
This one looks promising, with story by the guy who did the movie, and beautiful interiors, but the first issue was really just a taste of what this miniseries has to offer.

Thunderbolts Reason In Madness
This one-shot features Venom’s conflicted evilness and an offer to get more than he deserves. This was the first thing of Thunderbolts I have read, and if it is as great as this, Thunderbolts is a must read.

X-Factor Quick and Dead
This one-shot is about Quicksilver, in jail and out of his power-granting crystals. He seems to be going through power withdrawal, and this issue changes his character from now on.

This Week
Captain Britain and MI 13 #1
Captain Britain is back with his own book! And he brought the John Lennon skrull and the Black Knight with him. This book is much better than I expected it to be, and looks really nice. This starts out as a Secret Invasion tie-in, but it is an ongoing that will branch out as soon as the skrulls take over the earth.

Guardians of the Galaxy #1
Taking place after Annihilation Conquest wrapped up, this book is a new ongoing all about our favorite space heroes teaming up to make sure nothing like the Annihilation Wave or Phalanx ever have the chance to rise up and threaten the galaxy again.

Newuniversal: Shockfront #1
NewuniversalThis miniseries is the sequel to the newuniversal mini that Warren Ellis did a while ago (he does this one too) and follows all the same characters and plots that the first series left hanging. Looks fantastic and probably will be followed by another newuniversal mini after it wraps up.

Secret Invasion Fantastic Four #1
This mini will explain what happens with the Baxter Building and everyone in it after the pages of Secret Invasion #1. A great read, and it will only be 3 issues long, so we might see the FF show up in Secret Invasion after this mini is over.

Soleil Sky Doll #1
This new book is beautiful, hands down. The art is worth the price alone, and the story features an interesting universe about robots. Check it out, but don’t let anyone young see it, this book has more nipples than that chick from Total Recall.
