Goodbye Virgin, Hello Liquid

October 28, 2008 – 12:42 pm by Tiffany

Yes, that sounds moderately naughty…but we can’t be held responsible for other peoples’ choice in names.  We can only infer suggestive connotation and snicker behind our hands.

Sadly, Virgin Comics is no more…however, there is hope on the horizon for the innovative and distinctive publishing company.  The soul of the now-defunct Virgin has always been based in it’s founders, which include the prestigious Deepak Chopra (believe it or not, he also writes a pretty good book) and his son, Gotham.  Anyone who would pick such an awesome name for his child must be a genius, so we’re not too worried about the success of the newly reformed Liquid Comics. The Chopras and their band of Merry Men have picked up the pieces left behind when Virgin pulled out (oh no, she didn’t) so the word is that the same titles you’ve come to enjoy (The Sadhu, Shekhar Kapur’s Devi, John Woo’s Seven Brothers…) will still be produced.

We still don’t know what that means for future distribution dates, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for the latest news.  We’re confident they’ll be back in the proverbial saddle in no time.  So much for trusting daredevil media moguls.  Maybe next time they won’t jump into bed so impetuously.

(On a side note, our “Virgin” stock is getting thin…grab it while you can!)

The last of the Greats….

September 29, 2008 – 10:56 pm by Funny Papers

As most of you know by now, Paul Newman has left this mortal coil.  He was in the Pantheon of greats that included Brando, Mitchum, and McQueen.  We wanted to take a moment and recognize this last of the Greats…the world will be a little less without him.

Who Needs To Eat When There’s Comics To Be Read?

September 20, 2008 – 2:43 am by Tiffany

Funny Papers is thrilled to announce that we now accept Bevo Bucks!  We know you always end up buying the cool stuff on the drag instead of getting your three squares a day, so we thought we’d do our part in making your University experience as memorable as possible.  After all, you’ll need to be able to tell your kids that when you were in college you ate nothing but ramen and potato chips.

Forget the daily recommended fruit and veg…who needs that when Deadpool #2 is coming next week!

Update for week of 7/23/08

July 22, 2008 – 2:02 pm by Funny Papers

Howdy! Here’s what’s up for this week:

-The new Magic set, Eventide is releasing on Thursday. It’s the second in the Shadowmoor block, and it looks to be more of the same great art and interesting new mechanics. Make sure to check it out!
-We’ve acquired more early 90s back issues, including a ton of Superman and Action Comics. Most of the Batman stuff is out now, so take a look! Everything is $1 for subscribers, and $2 for non. Cheap, eh?
-Some big releases are out this week. Mark Millar and Tony Harris’ new series, War Heroes debuts and it looks AMAZING! Billed as their “Ultimates 3,” this is a must read for sure! A crap-load of Secret Invasion tie-ins along with the easy-to-jump-back-on-and-great-looking Uncanny X-Men #500 make up most of Marvel’s highlights, and the Batman RIP story continues with Robin #175 from DC.

And now, the books. Everyone have a great week!

Secret Invasion #4

July 15, 2008 – 1:49 pm by Greg Webster

Secret Invasion #4 normal coverI think #4 is the best yet. We get to see some serious bad-assery by both Nick Fury and Black Widow, with both of them making some straightforward approaches to not knowing who your allies are. Also coming up is some obvious back thought between her and Wolverine about trusting each other, FINALLY. Before I was worried about all the Savage Land heroes running around like a chicken with their heads cut off (I’m looking at you Spidey) but now I can look forward to someone finally trusting each other. This issue’s cliffhanger is much more impacting the others, with some more appearances that everyone should be looking forward to. One thing I am really enjoying about this series is the relative shortness of everything, in 4 issues we have probably only seen 30-40 minutes of activity, letting the 3 Avengers titles tell a lot of the backstory necessary to a title with this much speculation about past events. Also, I think by looking at some of the Avengers stories, a rough plan against the Skrulls can be seen beginning to form, making it fun to guess the upcoming issues happenings.
